TATIANA APRÁEZ | Colombia
International Award Jury of LaBienal
"Advisory for Developing Commercial Pieces Using Techniques and/or Materials Involving Artisan Practices."
October 1-2, 2024 | 11 AM to 6 PM
CITY LAB – GAM
TATIANA APRÁEZ
I graduated as an Industrial Engineer in my country and as a Jeweler from Escola Massana in Barcelona. Since 2003, I have dedicated myself to incorporating barniz de pasto, a traditional technique from southern Colombia, into my jewelry pieces. In parallel with my work in jewelry, I have been the Co-Founder and Co-Director of Escuela Materia Prima in Bogotá since 2013. The school focuses on contemporary jewelry with an emphasis on developing critical thinking by exploring our environment, our Latin American roots, and the possibilities this offers as artisanal territories.
Over the years, I have received several recognitions, including: 20-Year Career in Promoting the Pre-Hispanic Technique of Barniz de Pasto through Contemporary Jewelry; Medal for Contemporary Craftsmanship Mastery, Grand Prize Japan Jewellery Competition (2022), and the acquisition of three of my pieces for the permanent exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London, 2023). Recently, I was awarded the Lápiz de Acero Azul.

Course Content
The course will guide each student through an individual evolution of a project they are developing, which involves various artisanal techniques or crafts. The goal is to take these starting points and develop them into commercial pieces. The course intends to guide each participant through a methodology to explore different approaches to their project, ultimately resulting in a series of pieces that will either be planned or started, depending on the progress of each student.
This course is designed to transform artistic, conceptual, or unique projects that students bring at the beginning, involving artisanal techniques, into commercially viable pieces. The aim is to ensure that all the time, research, and skills invested by the participant can be redirected or viewed from a commercial perspective.
During the module, students can also receive advice on existing pieces, analyzing them, and improving any design and construction issues. The focus is on enhancing the product, elevating artisanal techniques, and ensuring efficient, high-quality production.

TALLER MEMORIAS | Chile - España
"Create a Basketry Object with Metal"
October 3, 2024 | 11 AM to 2 PM
CITY LAB – GAM
TALLER MEMORIAS
Taller Memorias is an artistic duo formed in 2014 by two women who connect and nourish each other, (co)creating from a refuge where they materialize their dreams, located in the commune of Padre Las Casas in the La Araucanía region.
Carmen Gloria Vivanco is a Visual Artist from the Universidad Católica de Temuco. As an artisan-artist, she has been weaving together local knowledge for over 20 years, stitching memories, feminisms, resistances, jewelry, and artifacts.
Mercedes Nistal, born in León (Spain) and a professional Environmental Engineer with a diploma in Crafts and Management, is the (co)creator and cultural manager of the workshop.
Their creations oscillate between jewelry and woven objects, a weave with a woman’s body that unravels the hegemonic discourse. They speak of pain through metaphors, sew deep wounds with silver and copper, turn their work into a catalyst, and raise a manifesto.
They co(i)nspire, becoming accomplices and confidants.
They weave and shelter in an undefined territory.

Workshop Content
When people develop their creativity and imagination by participating in group processes, they improve their ability to communicate and collaborate. This workshop aims to create bridges of dialogue between an artistic proposal and its sociocultural context, questioning the work being done. The initial idea is to understand how to work with the weaving technique using metals in an object, projecting the technique to other possible scales and/or volumes (from objects to jewelry).
I. General Objectives:- Facilitate instances of dialogue among women through artisanal exploration with metals.- Develop skills and abilities that strengthen the autonomy of the participants. - Transform metallic waste or other unused materials into valuable portable objects.
II. Specific Objectives: - Create a decorative or functional piece using copper wires or other similar materials that can be repurposed into valuable objects.
